When Panerai
was gaining popularity back around the year 2000,
they made perhaps four different models. In the
intervening years, the number of models, metals
and special editions has multiplied geometrically.
Panerai is one of the hottest watch brands ever
and shows no sign of letting up. In 2005, Panerai
announced they were the new Ferrari licensee and
in 2006 have begun producing Ferrari models. These
Ferrari watches feature Panerai's first in-house
caliber Calibre P2002. Panerai has also made some
Luminor models from tantalum (which they call Tantalium),
which is an interesting metal because it is nearly
as heavy as platinum. Panerai was first considered
a fad, then a trend, but have proven to the world
that they are here to stay. You can't beat the massive
water resistant cases with simple but beautiful
dials.
