Guillermin
Mollet (GM) is much more than a watch brand, it
is the realization of a dream of long-time vintage
watch collector Sig Shonholtz. I met Sig at the
2004 Basel Fair, and heard the story of how GM went
from being a dream to becoming a watch brand.
You see, Sig is passionate about vintage Patek Philippe watches. For years he hunted one very specific watch from Patek, which is how the story begins...
What made this watch so special was that Patek commissioned the famous Parisian goldsmith firm of Guillermin Mollet to make the case, with specific instructions that the case capture the style of Paris in 1950, a year in which Chanel, Lalique and several other artisans were remaking the reputation of Paris as an international design center.
Guillermin Mollet did not disappoint Patek. They delivered oversized, complicated and ornate cases with a distinct art deco style, which Patek fitted with movements. No one knows how many were made, and only 3 pieces were known to be in existence in the 1990s.
Frustrated by the rarity and seeming impossibility of acquiring one of the three remaing watches, Sig had an idea: make exact replicas out of modern parts.
And so it is that the new Guillermin Mollet was born. Sig had 450 watches made: 150 each in solid 18 carat Yellow, Rose, and White Gold. Fitted with automatic ETA series movements, each watch features a super-nice hand-cut crocodile strap and 18 carat matching buckle. Check out all the dial styles available in the pictures.
The size and shape of the case is the real attraction of these watches, in my opinion. The size is versatile enough to serve as a dress watch or everyday watch, and complements a man's or a woman's wrist equally well.
